This was always a favorite in our house when I was a kid. Filling the whole house with the smell of "you are loved here", it's sure to be a favorite for your family, too. Enjoy!

Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour 2 loaf pans or one 9 x 13 baking dish.
1 lb. Raisins 3 ½ C. water
2 C. Sugar ½ C. shortening, lard or coconut oil
1 tsp. Cinnamon 1 tsp. ground cloves
2 tsp. Baking Soda 4 C. unsifted flour
*Add soda and water last.
Cook raisins in 2 C. water for 30 minutes.
Take from stove and add 1 C. water, 2 C. sugar, Shortening and spices.
Let cool and mix with flour. Add baking soda dissolved in water.
Bake at 350o 45-55 minutes.
Test for doneness by gently sliding a table knife into the top of the
cake(s). When done, knife comes out clean.
Serve warm or cool. Top with freshly whipped cream.
