Misty Meadows policy on endangered and at-risk plants

Many traditional herbs and plants that we have relied on in the past are now endangered due to overharvesting and loss of habitat. Misty Meadows honors our plant allies and is committed to their conservation. We want to see these plants for generations to come. For this reason, we have made the difficult decision to no longer offer endangered and at-risk herbs available for purchase on our website, if at all. As our understanding of plant allies deepens and grows, many other herbs have made themselves available that are beautiful complements and substitutions to at risk species. We do stock some of these herbs in the shop, and you are welcome to come in and speak to an herbalist about them. As of February 1, 2023 these plants have been removed from the website:

  • American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius)

  • Arnica (Arnica spp.)

  • Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)

  • Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalicatroides)

  • Cascara Sagrada (Frangula purshiana)

  • Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)

  • Lobelia (Lobelia Inflata)

  • Lomatium (Lomatium dissectum)

  • Osha (Liusticum porter)

  • Pleurisy Root/Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa)

  • Sandalwood (Santalum spp.)

  • Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra)

  • Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum spp.)

  • White Sage (Salvia apiana)*

  • Wild Yam (Dioscorea villosa)
